A team of scientists from the UK and Canada have developed a new type of single-molecule transistor that uses quantum interference to control the flow of electrons. Traditional transistor manufacturing methods have reached their limits, and due to the quantum tunneling effect, electrons can leak even when the transistor is turned off. The research team used quantum interference to develop a new type of transistor that eliminates the effects of quantum tunneling.
Commentary: This breakthrough is expected to lead to the development of new transistors that are smaller, faster and more energy-efficient than existing devices, to create a new generation of electronic devices.
